When we buy a mobile phone, most of us install WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Imo or Viber for chat, voice & video calls. But did you ever ask yourself how secure these apps are? Did you ask yourself the question is your chat thread or calls really private and can’t be monitored by a third party? Well, some of you may say, what is the big deal if someone is watching for whatever reason? It is not only a question about the right to privacy but also a question of ethical standard. When you install these apps, you don’t know that whatever private texts you are writing to your loved ones, some other person can read and follow it without you knowing anything about it. Isn’t it a disgusting feeling? Facebook declared that WhatsApp and Facebook messenger uses the end-to-end encryption that makes chats and calls entirely private. Microsoft has taken the initiative for Skype. But you will find tons of articles in many blogs why this kind of encryption is not entirely secure and the chat history can be accessed by the authority if needed. Moreover, the data leak, selling and hack became frequent around Facebook. So, many people no longer trust their claims and technology. But the mass is still enjoying the service of these popular apps for different reasons.
But we say, let’s see what the alternatives are. Is there any app that guarantees 100% privacy? We found the app “Signal”. It is a US-based app recommended by Edward Snowden himself. But people nowadays know how strong NSA is especially in their own region. So, many are hesitant to go for a US-based app (sad for Signal) as far as our research is concerned. We also found some security issues but still way better than WhatsApp and co. We weren’t fully satisfied. Then we came across a few more fine alternatives and found “Wire” among them.
Wire is a Switzerland based company and instantly you think about the security standard of Swiss banks. No surprise, we figured out Wire is built with similar class and concept. In our eyes, it is the most superior messenger and calling app as far as security and privacy is concerned. It has some minor security gaps which are beyond the scope of this article. But we couldn’t find any app that is 100% secure considering ALL the technical aspects. For us, it gets the first prize. You can create an account anonymously and you will know any permission you give to the app. It is also possible to withdraw any permission anytime. The finest of all, no history will be saved by the app and there is no way anyone even the app admin can access your chats and calls. You can use Wire on windows, iOS, Android, in browsers such as chrome, edge, firefox or even in Linux OS. We recommend Wire for those who are conscious about their right to digital privacy and value the strong security standard of a Swiss-made app.
