Daylight Photo:

The 50MP Sony IMX852 sensor and the f/1.8 aperture should make for sharp, well detailed and colourful daylight images. This sensor is famed for its capability to maintain a balanced dynamic range that brings skies, shadows and highlights to balance, instead of blowing them out. It's likely that outdoor and daytime photos will be one of the Y500's better features when used in conjunction with the HDR function.

Low-light Photo:

The f/1.8 aperture should allow the Y500 to pick up more light, thus providing a good advantage for low-light settings, especially when compared to the mid-range camera. In Auto mode, there will be bright and clean images, but some details will be a bit soft and noisy, as is common with phones in the segment. In Night mode, the shots will be a lot brighter and cleaner than in Auto mode; as the lighting gets lower, there will be more noise and softness in the details, although in a manner that's not as noticeable as with other phones in the segment.

The rear and front camera support a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (Full HD), and can shoot video at 30 fps. It doesn't surprisingly lack 4K video recording, which can be a major drawback for users who prefer to produce high resolution videos for YouTube or reels.

Overall the camera system is a more general and casual approach to photography than a serious shot. While it has the potential to be the flagship level camera with its 50MP sensor, the lack of 4K video and a basic depth sensor will not please those looking to get flagship level camera performance.

Performance & Software

Fitted with the Vivo OriginOS 6, the Vivo Y500 packs Android 16 on top of it to provide a new and modern UI that offers a ton of customization options, smooth animations, and all the classic Vivo exclusive features. This will look like home to those who have used a Vivo phone before.

The fun doesn't start until you start under the hood, however. It runs on the Unisoc T7300 octa-core processor, which is manufactured using a 6nm process with four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.8GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.9GHz with Mali-G57 MP1 GPU. This is not a high-end chipset designed to do heavy lifting, it's a budget type chipset all the way down.

The 120Hz display and optimizations to OriginOS should make the Y500 snappy for all everyday use, such as browsing, texting, streaming and social media. Don't expect that multitasking between light applications will be a problem either. When you begin to push it, heavy gaming, resource intensive applications or extended editing sessions the limits of the Unisoc T7300 will begin to be revealed. Not all games will be playable at high settings without some lag or frame drops, especially those that are graphically heavy.

Just to note that this chipset is about on par with something like a Helio G99, meaning that casual mobile gamers who aren't playing super-heavy games will still be able to enjoy themselves.

To sum up, the Vivo Y500 has been designed for comfort, not speed. It does not falter when it comes to everyday tasks, but when gaming and heavy multitasking are at the top of your list, this isn't the chipset that will meet your demands. It's evident that Vivo decided to invest its budget in something different, namely the display and the battery.

Battery & Charger

Vivo Y500's battery is where it really comes into play. The 8100mAh Li-Ion battery is a massive one and in the real world, it equates to no less than a full day and half of use on a charge, even with the bright 120Hz AMOLED display powered on all the time. The same applies to light-to-moderate users, who can do the same within two days.

44W wired charging with USB Type-C 2.0. Not the quickest charging speed around, particularly when the battery is so large but it'll suffice in a respectable amount of time and ensure you're not stuck waiting around for too long when you need a top-up.

As is common these days, the battery is not replaceable, so no DIY replacement down the road.

Overall, if all-day (or more) battery life is at the top of your priority list, the Y500 delivers exactly what it promises. It is definitely the highlight of this phone, and Vivo has designed the rest of the phone around it.
